Still time to plant fruit?

Thinking of planting a few cherry trees and some currant/gooseberry bushes asap, in ground and pots. Any ideas if I should do it now or wait till later in autumn and if I need special soil for the pots and if the ph is important (mine is bizarrely low!

You need a heavy compost for the pots for fruit trees, otherwise they will not be stable. John Innes is often recommended. Fruit trees and bushes are still in the shops, so if you can pick up some bargains I would go ahead.
