Pineapple

on holiday once in the lake district we had a pineapple at a picnic. We 'planted' the top in the little clearing in the woods where we'd eaten lunch. I've always had a little mental picture of some mad botanist recording it as a first for britain!

I have 2 pineapple plants, rooted as tops 2-3 years ago, one in flower, one with a fruit already growing, no special treatment other than keeping them frost free, so it can be done

I grew one successfully on the window sill of our semi at least thirty years ago. I seem to remember it rooting easily and we had a very small fruit the next year....but it tasted awful! I have tried numerous times since but never managed to get the tops to root sufficiently. In fact, I bought a rather unripe pineapple yesterday with the aim of trying to do the same yet again... it is a hopeless pineapple for eating but has a very good green top!

The textbook method is to cut off the top and remove most of the 'flesh' under the leaves, then put it in a sandy compost with plenty of bottom heat. Hasn't worked for me in recent years as they have rotted without rooting, but worth a try. If you can keep them fairly warm in winter you should succeed.
