Best strawberry variety for haging basket?

What is best for planting in a tumbling basket? I had heard Temptation is good for containers, presumably this also translates to baskets? How many plants for a normal sized basket?

Also, best to grow from seed or plant?

Sorry for all the questions! Never grown fruit before. Started with veg last year which I enjoyed, so thought I would go one step further

Container Gardening

The Sarian F1 is the one grown from seeds which I'm currently growing at the moment. The alpine varieties are definitely well suited to hanging basket.

Also check out previous thread for 'Strawberry in Window Box' which has discussions on the optimal number of strawberries per basket.

It is easiest to grow strawberries from the runner of other strawberry plants, and these perform best if you plant them up in the autumn (ain't that always the way!).

Having said that, you can buy runners now and put them in your baskets and the plants that grow will produce fruit - just not as many as you might expect.

If you grow from seed, there are fewer varieties available and it will take even longer to get to fruiting. However, if you are interested in the small alpine/ woodland types seed is your only option.

In terms of numbers of plants I would go for three in a basket but it does depend on whether you want to go for impact in one season or keep them growing until next year.

Perhaps you might use this year as a trial - make some notes about what you do and see what happens.
