  • Joan J rasps - yield info?

I've been looking at what variety of rasps to get for my lottie. I have a few un-named cheapo canes but have decided to get some 'Joan J' as the reviews seem to suggest it has pretty much all I want from a raspberry. The only thing I'm not quite clear on just what 'heavy' yields mean There are five of us to eat the fresh berries and I'm hoping to make jam and also freeze some for use in the colder months... but I don't want to be completely overwhelmed and end up chucking good fruit on the compost heap! Anyone care to suggest how many canes might suit us? Space isn't too much of an issue.

Lots of raspberries - is what 'heavy yields' mean!

There are two of us and we have (had) 5 canes. Confirming what PaulW and others have said, they throw up new canes with 'ease' - so this 2nd spring we have another 10 canes sitting in a raised bed, growing on from being 'seperated' in December/Jan time.

So you could save dosh and start with a few and see how it goes?

ps they made very good gin & brandy!

Well, if you got a 'bogof' after just a year, I think starting small sounds very sensible! Thanks

I gather you're in a hurry to get them sorted this year otherwise I can offer you a good selection of raspberries (Glen Ample & Golden Everest for summer Autumn Bliss & Fallgold for autumn) but not sure they'll be ready this year. Next year if I'm lucky I may acquire Tulameen, Galante and Polka to which you're welcome if you don't mind waiting. Polka may be comparable to Joan J and rated very highly in most parts of Europe.

Wow veg, that's a great selection! You're right that I'm in a bit of a 'want it now' phase but being realistic, there's a way to go yet with getting the lottie sorted, so I may well be looking for more stuff next year!

My raspberry bed is the width of my lottie approx 18feet. It is a double row and gives me more than enough raspberries, usually picking a 2lt icecream container every 3/4 days. I find that to many is never a problem as there is always someone willing to take surplus off your hands.
