  • dumb question re ALDI fruit bushes

Wife got me all three different packs. Work kept me away till today. Son has kindly potted them up into florists buckets as advised in previous post. He didn't label them. How can I tell which is which? I can recognize the raspberries but none of the others.

You'll have to let them grow a bit before you can start Id the soft fruit bushes. Besides it's not a bad idea that they start off in a pot for the roots to develop further. As soon as the foliage starts to appear, then the task is easier (I should think) and besides the Grapes will be at your disposal. I myself know what a Gooseberry foliage looks like and there others for other fruit bushes. So don't worry too much .

In fairness to your son, they where not labeled in the packs either. Now I know gooseberries have thorns, big ones.

Blackcurrants and Redcurrants will be quite stick like with fat buds alternate up the stem, could also have hollow stems depending on the thickness of stem.

Black berries will look just like a bramble with no leaves.

What else was there..? Tayberry..? Not sure about that, depends on whats left.

You could try searching Google Images for anything that matches? Definitely easier as foliage appears though.

            Google Image Search

I had a pack with blackberry, looks like a green stick and mine was thornless. Gooseberry Careless was a single stem with quite wicked looking thorns. and a redcurrant Jonkheer van Tets which was the only one with multi stems. All looked in good condition and had shoots starting on all three. Keeping them in pots under cover for the time being.

I have retrieved the packaging and have:- Blackberry, Tayberry, Blackcurrant(Ben Lomond), Raspberry - Glen Cova and Glen Ample, Gooseberry - Red Dessert and Careless and Redcurrant. I didn't really intend to grow all of these was giving the Tayberry, Blackberry and one of the Gooseberries to a friend. Gues that will have to wait.

I can't believe you got these named varieties so cheaply, I mean Malling Jewel and Glen Cova raspberry but that's only one cane per pack and you need to buy a few pack to get the assortments I guess. I paid about £5 for my Tayberry from J Parker (online) and it's quite minute, possibly same size (if not even smaller) as the cheapies bushes from cheapies stores. I really didn't think Tayberry would be sold this way (must compare notes to see if the more expensive ones harvest a year earlier). You win some, you lose some I guess. Alright I'm looking for Loganberry next. Anyone has more list of the varieties?
