Propagating apple trees

I need to prune an apple tree (Ashmead's Kernel) and I want to try a) get it to root b) grow it on its own roots.

I know this is difficult but want to try anyway. Has anyone ever done this ?

I am guessing that you want to get a tree of Ashmeads Kernel not growing on a rootstock but on its own roots but NOT trying to change the present tree you have.

Best idea I can think of it to take a suitable branch or twig and try to get this to form roots by air layering. If this is successful then when strong enough you can cut the branch off and plant. Than you will have Ashmeads Kernel on its own roots.

The advantage of this method is that the branch is growing on the tree as normal while attempting to form roots.
