  • Raspberry novice needs advice

    Hi all,

I know this has come up before, but I have just received my plants, and need advice. I have 3 each of Glen Moy/ Ample and Autumn Bliss. I know I stake either side, and put up support wires, for the 2 summer fruiters.

Also, remove perennial weeds, but what else do I need to do?

Any advice appreciated, thanks in advance.

plant them about 9" deep & give them a good dose of well rotted manure or compost and yes make sure you move all weeds, couch grass, etc. Stand back and watch them grow

I think I am right in saying that the summer varieties fruit on last years canes so you need to tie them in to the wires over the winter and then cut them back after they have fruited next year and keep next years growth for the year after. I only grow Autumn ones and these fruit on this years growth. I usually get a harvest from August until Nov although picked last one this year in Mid December. I cat them back to ground level once all fruit gone and new canes coming through already.

        Hi Baz
I'd put a good thick mulch down when you've planted them (over moist earth) this will help if we have a really hot summer and also help with the weeds, they are very shallow rooted and getting weeds out is a real pain (I know!) and any seeds that root in the loose mulch are a lot easier to pull out.
