  • plot not ready yet.can I use containers?

literally only just got the allottment and it needs some work doing before it can be used . I want to get started though!!! was thinking of raspberries and rhubarb so can i start these off in gowbags or pots and then move them into their spaces when they become weed free and dug over?

Rhubarb will be fine in a large container, I have two in buckets. You won't be able to crop them this year though as they need a chance to establish a good root system before you can start harvesting them. Think the rasps will be okay in pots until you have their 'bit' ready too

They like a lot of well-rotted poo as well.

Fresh poo is no good I am afraid, but if you follow the horses to where they live you might find a source of well-rotted

Rhubarb is very accommodating and if you have decided where its going I would just dig a hole, chuck some FYM in and bung it in. You only need the area of a plastic dustbin, and thats what I use for blanching, a bin with the bottom cut out. Fill it with straw and just leave it! Dead easy.

Raspberries are a different matter, I have just planted some I was given last week! Far better, unless your'e getting them for nowt or very cheaply, to prepare the bed for them, THEN buy the raspberry canes I would think. You may even be able to get a hold of pot grown specimens later in the year.

I only mention this because I had a similar problem to you when I first took over my plot, all my apples, pears, tayberries, blackcurrants, redcurrants, whitecurrants and gooseberries survived for the first year in pots but my raspberries died!

yep, about the same as me but at the moment its weekends only so we will be spending this weekend there weather permitting just trying to get at least a few feet ready!! Both me and my son keep coming hime with goodies we have bought- packets of fleece from pound shop, packets of seeds and he bought home 3 strawberry plants yesterday as his girlfriend has never picked strawberries -we will have to keep those alive for a while though before we plant those out!!

hi, I put manure down, cardboard on top, and planted marrows, pumpkins, sweetcorn etc through it with a straw mulch in our first year. Potatoes will clear ground too and you will get an ok crop. manure is the answer
