  • Soil preparation for Raspberries?

    Gardening newbie.

Got two Autumn Bliss Raspberry plants (5 canes each) today and am going to plant tomorrow (if it stops raining).

Just wondering what type of soil preparation I should do for Raspberries? My soil looks pretty poor - real clayie, with building rubble. Currently its waterlogged... in summer its very dry... strange I know... its a plot of land at back of semi-d that is contained by block walls and is at least 4 foot higher than the surrounding gardens on 3 sides (hence the 'great drainage' in summer).

Any quick tips on soil preparation/fertilisers?

    Cheers

Dig a trench or deep hole and line it with soaked newspaper or cardboard to hold in the water. Add a layer of rotted compost or other goodie to help feed the canes. Take out all the large lumps of brick etc from the soil. Mix the soil that you are going to use for actually planting the canes with a little bone meal. Hey Presto just wait for them to start growing.

Did this with mine on heavy clay soil with an emormous ammount of flint in it last year and this year they are springing up like weeds!!!
