I've just bought a Hildaberry for my allotment fence. It's a cross between a boysenberry and a tayberry - and it has small but significant thorns!

Are they poisonous?? ...not according to this link-

But other links say you get stomach cramps and the runs if you eat them.

Actually I know what is really thorny - Japanese wineberry.
I have some - very fruits yet - and it makes bramble look thornless.

I decided to go with Himalayan Giant Blackberries as suggested by Madasafish, been reeding up and they can grow to 10 meters wich is excellent.

                Thanks all for the replies.

                Cheers Chris

Also take a look at worcesterberry it has thorns like Gooseberry on steroids. You get fruit too if you dare to pick it. Gardening gloves are no protection.

Hawthorn, blackthorn both make vandal proof hedges. Another very good one is berberis but not edible as far as I know.
