  • Charentais Melons - No propogator required

As melons need a good growing season I started a few in pots (Charentais) on the kitchen worktop as usual. With it not being particularly warm I expected germination to take a week to ten days.

Six days later they are up and have been moved to the heated greenhouse to grow on, slow and hard as the temp is set to a minimum of 10 degrees, although in the day solar gain invariably makes it a bit warmer.

As we are growing far fewer tomatoes and chillies this year I actually have room to grow them on till they get planted out into the allotment greenhouse and tunnel in mid May.

I look forward to seeing pictures of your success PW. I couldn't resist and also bought some Charentaise melon seeds - takes us back to a very hot 3 weeks spent on an Anglo-French dig near Niort. The dig's lunches were provided by a local farmers wife. The (veggie!) things she could do with a globe artichoke! And her charentaise melons were fabulous!

Don't suppose they'll taste quite the same over here?

You never know Manda, a summer like 76 and I bet they do, one like 07 and I fear the worse.
