  • Question About Fig, Orange, and Lemon Trees

    Hi People,

I have 2 fig trees indoors, got them about 3 months ago at about a pencil size, have since doubled in size but the leafs are now wilting. Therefore question is should I move outside?

Same for the Orange and Lemons trees re moving outside (these are not wilting).

If the fig is wilting then I wouldnt put it outside, I would try and figure out why it is wilting is it being over watered is it getting enough light, has it been touched by frost (in case its indoors in a garage or unheated greenhouse).

As for the lemon and the orange it way too early to put them outside, the shock of going from warm to cold will shock them and at the very least you will have leaf and fruit drop and possibly even kill them. I would wait until around the end of spring to put them outside although if there are particularly warm spring days you could put them out during the day.

Ps once the fig is a bit more established you will be able to leave it outside next winter, and if you leave the citrus trees out until the end of the summer they will happily over winter in an unheated greenhouse.

      Hello Chris,

Fig's are in the living room, light is ok, thought it might be to do with the temp outside and therefore the central heating ramping up indoors?

As for watering not sure, we tend to fill the saucer at the bottom and let it do its stuff?

      Any other comments greatfully appreciated.

      Cheers

        Hi Danny

Sounds like you watering ok as long as none of them are being left sat in water for overly long periods (mainly the citrus) as you say it might be the central heating, is there an unheated room you could put it in? spare bedroom conservatory etc if not then try moving it away from any radiator.

PS if you do happan to ever shock the citrus plants cut them back by 1/3rd and this give the plant a better chance of recovery
        Cheers Chris
