  • Rasberry questions

Last night whilst I was cooking dinner, LadyWayne asked if I had room on my plot for raspberries.

I hadn't really considered growing fruit on the plot before now (raspberries are my favourite however so there is a chance), and I haven't really made any room for any. That said, I'm not sure how much room they take up or how many I'd need.

I also said that I thought I'm a bit late for planting any.

Was I talking out of my @rse?

Maybe you can use them as a windbreak to shield some other plants?
I put mine in about 3 weeks ago and I see Woolies and Wilkos still have them for sale.

Got to be worth a shot?

Do these bushes take up much space width-wise? I think I might be about to answer my own question - I guess it depends how much you prune them...

they dont take a lot of space widthways but longways if that makes sense, mine are in long rows across the plot & they need a support system to tie the new growth into, but they are so worth it, the taste is out of this world compared to the shop bought ones.

I have my rasps 2 foot apart in double off set rows.
My blueberries are in pots on the patio.

                    Both really.

I had strawberries on the plot last year (inherited), but they got swamped with bindweed before I had chance to do anything with them. I don't think they'll grow back as I dumped my manure on them.

If I was going to grow fruit, it would be raspberries and blueberries (although LadyWayne bought me some melon seeds as a Christmas present - so I'll probably try tho grow them too).

I thought that fruit takes up quite a bit of space and I'm pretty confident I'll use most of the plot for veg this year, so space is a premium. Already!

Just checked our 'veg diary' we didn't plant our 5 canes of autumn fruiting Joan J until 17th March last year. Being autumn fruiting the fruit on this years growth - which they did last year. We had a reasonable crop and have lots of cutting rooting to amke more plants.

Checkout the previous Joan J or autumn fruiting rasp threads. They're not meant to need staking unlike summer fruiting types, but I think a bit would help, even though they didn't sprawl much in their 1st year. I think (but can't remember) Joan J are thornless too?

My next door neighbours both grow rasps; along the back wall as they need to be tied in. Blueberries, I grow in the ground but I have persuaded my OH that they can go in his borders, as they go reddy purple in the autumn and will look good next to his grasses [he's very easily led].

I fully expect the blues to bush up over the years; the blossom of these is gorgeous as well.

I'e also got a little strawb patch and growing 2 types of melons [if the weather is right] this summer. You might find the strawb seeds will take in later years once you have spread the manure about. Tis nice to have strawbs that you weren't expecting, I always think.

One of the things that concerns me with raspberries is that it seems you can only buy a minimum of 6 canes (most in multiples of 10). That's quite a lot of room!

Try going to your local garden centre Wayne, they often sell them in containers. Or even Focus/B&Q - i bought a pot with 3 canes of All Gold from Focus last year and they also had Autumn Bliss. I've also been growing a few canes of Glen Lyon in the front garden next to the fence, which I bought in a pot from local GC a couple of years ago. We had quite a reasonable crop from them last year even though they're planted in a clump rather than a proper row. They don't take up a huge amount of room, and would probably be fine grown alongside a fence if you don't have room in your beds.
