  • planting raspberry help

Hi all. ordered some raspberry canes and they came yesterday but unsure how deep to plant them. The canes themselves are say 18" long but new growth is starting about 8" up and kind of seperate to the cane. Do I plant them so the new bits are above the soil or am I covering the new shoots?

Raspberries dont need to be planted deep. Are they bare root?
If so, give them a good soak in a bucket while you dig a shallow trench about 3" deep. Space the canes 18" apart, spread the roots out then cover with soil. They will appreciate a good mulch.
Are the autumn or summer fruiting? This will affect your pruning.
Imagination is everything, it is a preview of what is to become.

Plant them so the roots are about two or three inches below the soil surface. Raspberries are fairly shallow rooted. (I assume the plants do have roots and aren't just rootless cuttings)

Why are you planting in buckets MrsB? They would be much happier in open ground.

I know- but as usual I was a bit impetuos and ordered plants before I have the lottie dug where I want to plant them. I decided they would do best in practically one of the only areas I havent yet planted! I have a tree at side of lottie and if I put them where I have thought of they should get sun all day and be out of the way of other things

I inherited raspberries on my lottie no label so don't know what they are or what to do with them. I moved them as they were in the wrong place and pruned them last Sept Oct they are sprouting so will leave them to see what happens.
