  • where to get a vine from?

Hi My greenhouse arrives in 7-10 days (hoorah!) and I wondered if it was too late in the year to get a vine and put it inside the g/h?

I can only find one site to buy them at £22 each. No idea if this is good buy or not. Ideally I'd like 2, one eating and one for vino.

    Any advice I'd be grateful

That's very expensive. The cheapest way is to find someone with vines near you and get cuttings - they root very easily. Try e-bay or search the web. Mine only cost about two pounds each and they came from Germany! (unfortunately you're too late to get them from that source this year as it was necessary to order in advance). One more thing - plant your vine outside the greenhouse and lead the stem in through a small hole.

Try Lidl or Aldi too. I'm sure I've seen vines in one of these very recently.

Bummer - we don't have an aldi or a lidl... nearest Aldi is 20 miles and nearest lidl is 15.

They should not be more than about £10 at your local garden centre.

And of course, it depends on their size, age etc when you buy them. The £22 vine may be three/four years old and 6' high whilst the Wilco/Lidl etc may only be a recently rooted or grafted older stick at this stage. I can get really good grapevines here for 9 euros, 2nd year grafts or cuttings but then I can also pay 25/30 euros if I want something much older/advanced.

Lidl and £stretcher have them in this week at £3.99 each and they look healthy. I was tempted as I grew grapes outside at my other house. However as I am loosing mt plot I thought maybe not!

                        Vines - Woolworths

Saw vines reduced to £2 in Woolworths this week. They also had various shrubs and fruit trees all reduced. Good luck
