Pruning Goji berries

Have just taken delivery of three bare rooted Goji berry plants from T & M anyone know anything about pruning them ? they look to be sprouting from just below ground, bit like an Autumn fruiting raspberry would. Do they fruit primarily on young or old wood or both, what pruning regime should one use in future years. I am going to keep them in pots to start with, and see how they do.

Mine arrived this morning and they've got the same sprouts as described but I'm finding it hard pushed to see any roots? Did yours have roots?

Mine look like dry twigs at the top with the few green shoots you describe.

Anyone know if they'll grow in pots?

The roots are the thicker bits at the bottom and they will grow in tubs but not as well as in the ground.

Mine were in tubs last year and came to no harm. They're definitely doing better now they're in the ground though.

Thanks guys, I think I might start them this year in tubs and if they do okay I'll find a space in the garden for them

Goji berries

We got 3 of them last year and put them into the ground and they all seem to have died off so not sure whether we should have put them in pots first.

Mine arrived this morning - I got a bunch of sticks too. One has a root and one has a little bud. However, the instructions that came with them say to plant to the soil level that can be seen on the stem - blowed if I can see the soil level (unless it is the bottom two inches that are a slightly different colour) anyone help please? I would have expected some root on a two-year old plant, why do they cut them off? If I only bury the bottom two inches, how do I get them solidly planted so they don't blow over? Sorry for so many questions.

Thanks Shirl, I'm glad it's not just me and mine then. Have to say I read the instructions and thought 'Soil Level'? They don't look as if they've been near any soil.

I've got mine stood in a flower vase full of water at the minute trying to decide how to plant them. Mine have quite a few green shoots very low down and I'm wondering if they need to be above or below soil level.

I did a google search last night and on one website (Victoriana I think) they said that buying bare root plants was not a very succesful way of growing Goji Berries - DOH! Still at least mine were a free gift.

I'm thinking the big paper bag the goji berries came in will do very nicely for storing some of my winter spuds

Received mine the other day and I must say that mine were not cut off like yours in the picture and you could definitely see what was root and what was top growth. Have planted mine in pots to start with just to get established before planting into lottie. Understand they don't need much pruning other than to keep in shape and possibly open up center of bush a little.

Received mine the other day and they were a pretty miserable lot - nothing like as healthy as the ones you have received. In fact, I thought there were only two of them - will go and have another look! They looked completely dead but i can now see one tiny green bud appearing.

i've just had my goji bushes delivered this week and they look dead ,i've just put them in pots for now. i thought i'd learn about them on gardners world ,joe was planting them on his allotment but all he did was give them to his wife to plant and that was it,no info on looking after them or if i give them a light pruning or not ,i was disappointed but his did look like twiggy branches too.so any info on what to do with them would be great.

Got mine today, they look dead too apart from one little shoot!
The instructions dont say anything about how to plant, only up to soil level etc..,
i was wondering if you guys just put them in pots of compost and wihen you plant them in the ground will you add anything? like compost, manure or fertiliser?
I hear rabbits like them so beware!!!

From the very quick glimpse we were shown of the ones on Gardeners World last night- Joe Swifts plants looked like sticks too.
Have to admit though his wife just bunged them into the soil quite deep.
I hope she got that right as there was no mention of correct planting depth!!

I only paid attention to it having read this thread.
