Well, I thought that it was Brown Turkey, but the figs do not seem to match those shown in catalogues.

Unfortunately its unlikely that Lidl or Wilkos (did Aldi sell them?) will have any left. Mine was £2.99 from Lidl, but I have to guess the variety. Check your local garden centres, ebay or google for a particular variety. Reads Nursery has some different types.Last edited by smallblueplanet; 16-06-2008, 07:31 PM.To see a world in a grain of sand

So how are your figs doing now then? How did they do last winter?
I bought a Brown Turkey earlier this year and found early on that they'll grow very fast and build up a structure pretty quickly if fed some nitrogen. It inhibits fruit production though so I only bothered to do it this year to get the plant established (it was a tiny, over-priced specimen from a garden centre).
I think it's got some figs developing now, there are some tiny bumps in between the leaf joints that I suspect may be figs instead of more leaves.
The main thing to watch out for is water and frost damage in this country, I think in some countries they put little bags over the figs in poor weather though, I might try it but I need to figure out how to keep away condensation first (no plastic sandwich bags would be a good start).
I bought another one from Aldi today - they never name varieties though which is kind of annoying. Brown Turkey seems to be the only one most suppliers bother with so I guess it's that or Dalmatie.
It has much bigger leaves than my Brown Turkey though and they look a bit different - lighter, more deeply lobed and the plant is taller in growth rather than my Brown Turkey which is quite compact at the moment. I've tried to guess the variety but it's hard to tell until figs develop.

to marcher, dont worry about the cold and wet,our brown turkey fig has sat outside for years, through two winters colder than - 13degs for weeks on end,as long as its in good soil,in a good sized (18ins +) pot to restrict the roots, and gets the max possible sun,you should be okay,we have had no fruit this year due to repeated long cold spells in the spring ,usually we get fruit despite the bad winters,so good luck,if you dont try,you dont succeed.....
