Miracle Fruit

Hi,
I'd love to try growing some Miracle Fruit (Synsepalum dulcificum) as a bit of a curiosity after seeing a bit about it on the web in the last couple of days. Does anybody have any experience growing this plant? Can I buy seeds, seedlings or cuttings from a reputable source?

It sounds fantastic, would love to be able to demonstrate the very strange qualities of the fruit to guests who haven't heard of it before.

Why would you want to, unless you eat or have access to a huge amount of lemons and limes?

Seems a bit of a gimmick to me, the benefit of basically paralysing your tastebuds into believe something is sweet when it is actually bitter sounds like a heston blumental sort of recipe.

Just to reiterate I would quite like some as a curiosity, a talking point if you like, you could even use the word gimmick if you prefer. Is this not a valid reason for wanting to grow something? I ackonwledge this is not one for the fruit purists maybe but very interesting in it's own right I feel.

growing something is by definition being curious isn't it ?
for the shape, the color, the taste doesn't matter!
I read that it takes many years to bear fruit...and it doesn't tolerate cold...maybe as an indoor or heated greenhouse shrub ?

Sorry cockadoodle, I wasn't trying to be unhelpful, I guess I am a bit of a purist at heart. I put little energy into growing anything that is either non edible or is not a natural benefit for other edible produce. You go for it chick.

I saw that story about miracle berries ... the outrageous big sugar agriculture b*tds stomped on it 40 years ago, and now yanks bottoms are too big to fit in an opera house seat. Absolute tragedy.

I bought mine on ebay from a seller called SiamPalm. He has got miracle fruit seedlings for sale all the time. Shipping them from Thailand to Belgium took about 7 days, I suppose it wouldn't take much longer to ship them to the UK. They're the same kind of seedling you get at Miracle Fruit UK but at a substantially lower price.

I planted mine in Substral Bonsaï soil as it was the only soil I could find with a low enough pH. (Miracle Fruit needs soil with a pH between 4.5 en 5.8 , the lower the better).

Well I have just read the blurb and having lived in Africa most of my life I can only recall one tree which looked like this and that was beetle nuts. Does anyone know what it is called in Africa? That may help me remember. I remember years ago reading about a firm who developed lefthanded sugar from a plant. I wasn't sure wether it was a wind up? Perhaps it was this plant?
