  • Strawberry's going brown?

I have planted in raised troughs some strawberry plants which came from last years runners on my fathers allotment patch, the plants are in great condition, healthy vigorous growth and a mass of flowers which are now producing masses of fruit.

Trouble is, some of the fruit is drying out and going brown?? as soon as I notice this I snip them off but am I missing somthing or is it perhaps a deficiency of somkind?

Any of you Strawberry experts out there help me?

    Regards
    Darren

Hi dwreed, i would say its lack of water. If you are feeding them normally its the only thing i can think of. Maybe someone else knows more about the subject than me.

Hi dwrudd, it could possibly be strawberry mildew so carry on taking off any damaged fruits and any leaves which have brown patches and make sure you keep the plants well watered. As the rest of the plant sounds Ok I wouldn't worry too much though.

I don't know if this will help or not but we had the same problem last year and couldn't understand what was going wrong.

We left them for this year and we are having a glut!! Apparently it can take a year for the runner to really establish iself.
The fruit has doubled in size and the runners we took last year are struggling!!

          Hope this helps

            Thanks Sam

It is nice to draw on others experiences, I was getting a little woriied as I don't grow much fruit, mainly Veg and was convinced it was me!

I shall enjoy the harvest we get this year and look forward to a bumper next year

Strictly speaking you should remove all the flowers the first year to let the plants establish ..... bugger that pass the cream

I'm the same Nick, I'd rather eat the strawberries now & grow new plants again next year from runners etc. than wait a whole year to eat them.
Darren, I was just reading an article that said you shouldn't water strawberries too much when they start to turn pink or you risk them getting grey mould! Can't win one way or the other but I just tend to water mine once a day if the weather is warm or sunny anyway.

                  Hi

                  Hi there!

i have been growing strawberries for a long time now and have experienced the flowers of one of my strawberry plant's going brown. its only on 3 of the flowers out of 20 or so of them. But still i would like to know how to prevent this from happening..

If anyone knows anything let me know..
Im guessing its poor pollination by who knows.

                  Cheers bye for now

Strawberry flowers go brown or black in the centre and the whole thing dies if they get frosted. We have had the occasional cold night (and we are likely to get more in the next few days) so that could explain it. Cover the plants with fleece at night if frost is forecast, but remember to remove it during the day to let the insects pollinate the plants.
