Small fruit trees?

Hi

I only have a small garden but we would like some fruit, what do people think of these? I am very new to this and so i dont really know what i am looking for!!

Have just planted some (see my posting re mini-orchard)- no experience as yet-awaiting reply from somebody out there, though all looking healthy so far. Friends have small (ish) dual apple and get very good results. Think they may be better in ground rather than in tubs as I hear that they tend to become unproductive after a few yaers in pots. Ken Muir website has a lot of info but don't know how to include link!

I bought a trio of 2 apples and a pear in 2006 from T&M. Grown in large pots lined with newspaper with the adition of water retaining gel crystals. Just top-dressed with chicken manure pellets on recommendation from someone on here (thanks).

Did nothing 1st year, one apple produced around 7 fruits in 2nd year and all 3 have produced blossoms this year - quite a few in the case of the 2 which had yet to 'deliver' - and some are setting baby fruits!

That seems like a nice collection you're considering - but if you're looking for this years to start off - did you notice that delivery is Feb-Mar 2009?

hi im also new to this and also want to grow some fruit .i have gone out and bought 2 lemon trees and am trying to find a lime tree.i read there quite easy to look after so maybe u could try something like that.let me know how u go and what u decide to try,good luck.

My parents got ones like that from J Parkers (J Parker Dutch Bulbs) but haven't had any fruit yet. It depends on how big your small garden is. We have 3 dwarf apple trees in our front garden, also from J Parkers. In their first year, we had 80 small apples of Laxton Superb, 10 apples of James Grieves and no Bramleys. I can't believe they didn't get pinched by the multitude of children around here!

The dwarf apple trees are about a metre high and probably won't get much taller and their branch range has a diameter of about 1 metre too. They need to be steaked though as dwarf roots aren't that deep apparantly.

how long before you want fruit and do you want it in a pot or in the ground. many mail order supply maiden (1 year) trees or 2 year at most. i got my fruit trees grown on a bush root stock which is next size up from patio, from a local garden centre rag taylors in southwell nottinghamshire their trees are 4 to 5 years old and cost between £17 and £19 for them each and all are doing well and fruiting as they debloomed the the previous years. i advise to shop around i did as my little one didnt want to wait 3-5 years for her fruit to grow!
