My pears are growing but there seems to be about 7 in each group. Should I thin them out & if so to how many & which ones?

My RHS books advise to thin fruit in mid-June and then again in mid-July selecting the best ones to finally leave around 2 fruit per cluster.

I think that you will also find a 'natural' thinning occurs as some juvenile fruits fall foul to weather and pest attention.

Many of my apples which looked like they had set fruit are starting to thin out - nature's way of selecting the fittest. Was so pleased at the time - but did wonder how a patio tree would support so many fruits! Now I know - it clearly won't and is taking care of business itself.

If, by June/July, there are way too many on the tree - thin out as advised above.
