  • Hi, new guy needs advice on strawbs

    Hi to all.

I need to ask all the strawberry growers out there if there is a variety of strawberry called "giganticus". As a friend told me that they saw it in a gardening magazine,He says that they grow to the size of a tennis balls, but has forgotten which magizine it was, and when.

I'd really like some help here, as I think he might be pulling my leg.

Also I am a massive strawberry glutton and wish it to be true.

I am trying my best to scour the net to find it but nothing as yet.

God would love it to be true. I would grow 100 of em given the chance.

I bet they are watery! Many 'giant' fruits can be a bit of a disappointment because they are just bulked up with water. That's why cherry toms are so popular. Small but sweet.

I am having a real problem finding it on the net, which is strange. I am tending towards the watery thing too.

It would be nice to bite into a strawberry the size of an apple..

The only variety that looks like it would satisfy the strawb glutton in me is the 'surecrop' variety.

But have I left it to late to buy and plant any more strawbs. I know I wont get fruit off them this year, but will it effect the plant for next year.

              Bakker - 'Gigantella® Maxim' Strawberry

There you go! Would be interesting to hear what they are like, I have a sneaky suspicion that they wont be as tastey as the little ones.

              Good luck

                Thanks for the replies everyone.

I have even dragged my wife into the search for the legendary "giganticus",
and so far have found only pictures of a petrified prehistoric one.

but will keep on searching, will try the maxi fructa variety next year though.

                thanks again.

                *EDIT*

Just found a picture of the maxim giant strawberry....that'll do for me.(well'until I find "Giganticus" that is)
