I find that the best control for aphids, scale insects etc. is to have a Tamarillo plant nearby. I have one in my greenhouse as a 'sacrificial lamb' and it is completely covered in insects. I don't have a single one on any tomatoes, cucumbers, aubergines or melons!
If you keep it in a pot then you can move it round the garden at will!
