Rhubarb Problem

We just discovered some strange stuff on both our rhubarb plants which are planted several metres apart. There was a strange jelly like substance on the stalks and leaves and some strange marks on the stalks. At the base of the stalks, there was white foam (which I believe contains a larvae from some sort of insect).

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas?

The foam is probably 'cuckoo spit' produced by froghoppers. Hose it off and it shouldn't cause any trouble. Not sure what the jelly thing is though.

The 'sap' from rhubarb sets to a jelly. If the stalks have been damaged at all, even cracked by blowing in the wind, you get this jelly-ish stuff. It's part of the plant's own system. Don't worry about it. You can still eat the rhubarb, just scrape it off or cut out that bit.

i get it on mine all the time and just wash it off, before using. the 4 that eat it are still here.
