Help with Grape Vine from shoot

I have just aquired a rather large off shoot from a black grape vine. The main vine is just smaller than the diameter of a pencil. I first planted the vine in a pot with compost and left it in the greenhouse. Most of the leaves began to die. I now have the vine in a large pot with with lots of compost mixed with some sand and stones to create a more gravely soil. I have trimmed all the dead leaves off, which is all of them. I now have a rather bare vine. I have also removed some of the long shoots. I have tried not to give it too much water. Its in a sunny spot too. It looks to me as though its dead. Can anyone help me?

If I manage to get it growing again, how can I identify which black grape it is?
Is this easy.

I'm just about to plant one in my greenhouse (not that that is any help to you ...) I've replaced a pane of glass at ground level with some marine ply with a hole in it, and I'm going to plant it outside, but grow it inside.

I wonder if its roots are getting too hot in your pot?

Kristen, living where you do, why not just plant it outside and let it grow away? The vineyards in Kent and the SW don't coddle their grapes and neither do people here, where grapes range from a few for domestic use - no double Guyot here unless you're growing over (around) 30 plus vines - to hundreds of acres.

I've said previously, if they're dessert grapes, let them grow outside and give the vine one hard prune in February, which is what we do, temperatures are still often minus 8 with no ill-effect to the vine. Then remove some of the embryonic bunches around this time, less grapes for sure but usually better quality, that's what they're doing in the vineyards round here now, go for the quality.

Nobody round here would dream of doing what you're suggesting, even in a domestic setting - I don't and have plenty of grapes, I dumped over 25 kilos of embryonic grapes yesterday from the very aged vine growing over my terrace.

I'm sure it would grow well outside, although the site is quite exposed (but so are the vineyards in France), but I'm after some interesting things in my cropping greenhouse, and a grape was on my list. (Its a Black Hamburgh)

Grows like a weed if you let it, why waste your greenhouse space when you could grow something really difficult.

I've got 30' of greenhouse length, but I'm very happy to have suggestions on "interesting" crops to grow.

This is a cropping house, if you have suggestions for "interesting" plants for Containers I have a 12' house for them, and I'm quite keen to get passionate about something. I haven't had greenhouse gardening as a hobby since the early '70s, and I'm struggling to get completely Anorak about it again (I've lost a load of Fuschias this year to God-knows-what, but I haven't really got anal about sorting it out ... I need to get that Passion going again! And I should be growing Cyclamen, Freesias and a bunch of other plants to flood the house with colour and fragrance during the Winter
