Please help - raspberry canes needed

I have been let down by J Parker Bulbs who have just notified me that they are unable to supply my order.

Will I still be able to purchase raspberry canes this late in the season? I don't want to wait 'til next season to put them in and then have to wait another year for them to fruit.

Any advice gratefully recieved...

might be worth trying your local garden centre, I went to mine yesterday and all raspberry canes had 75% off original price

Even if you put them in now, you won't get a (decent) crop.

Hold your horses. Wait until autumn, and do it properly

Or buy those 75% off ones and hope for the best

I reckon you want to plant bare-rooted in the Autumn (not sure when J Parker Bulbs were planting to supply you, but I don't reckon late Spring or mid Summer is a good time!)

Container grown plants will be different, of course. Maybe have a few of those and then some bare-root ones in the Autumn [which I expect will be cheaper]

You won't usually get raspberry canes until late autumn (October / November) as the suppliers will not lift them until they are dormant.

And have some patience, they grow, ripen and get harvested when the canes want to, doesn't really matter what the grower wants, plant and prune them (if necessary) in autumn and you should get some crop next year.

Well I think NoWayPedro's patience has run out because the plants were due to arrive earlier this year, but are now not coming, and thus another year will be lost.

Raspberries planted this autumn won't (and should not be allowed to) bear fruit next year - except for Autumn fruiting varieties (i.e. on current-wood) [and even then I don't think I would allow them to fruit in order to get a stronger plant established]

I know it's no help for instant raspberries but we get so many new canes shoot up each year~I dig them up & give them away~cheaper even than 75% off~is there anyone you know with existing canes that might be able to do same for you?

I would recommend the free giveaway option too - I have always got my Raspberries that way and have had great results. I know its not what it says in all the books.

Thanks for the tip off coomber about the SALE price raspberry canes in the garden centres. I bought some yesterday. I had no idea they would be trying to shift them at this time of the year. I usually avoid garden centres because it is generally too expensive.
There is even fruit on my purchase so I even did a taste test first!
