strawberry runners, have I done it right?

Hi all, new here and 1st year growing veg etc. Im not sure if what I have done with my strawberry runners is right. When they first started to grow I pegged them into pots but they just carried on growing longer with leaves on the end. when checked them they had not rooted. I ended up cutting the end, leaves and all, off and putting these in pots. They seem a bit withery (is that a word ?? !) but are not dead. Anyone know if these will take?

Did you peg them where the new plants / leaflets were forming ?

You need to peg the leafy end (at the end of the long runner)into soil.I did this to some of my daughters plants 2 weeks ago and they have rooted and are growing.I only cut off the runner from the parent plant once they have reached this stage.

Hi Supersam, put the leafy bit into the compost pot, peg this bit down before and after the leafy with hairpins and leave for a couple of weeks. When it has rooted cut o9ff from the parent plant.

if the runner hasnt rooted it will die fairly soon if youve cut it of

What you can do in future years is cut the end of the runners leaving about 2 plantlets this will perhaps get them to root a bit quicker & isn't such a strain on the mother pant .

If you've cut them off before they've rooted you may as well bin them as they won't survive on there own.

It's like an umbilical chord & provides the nutrents till the plantlets have formed roots of their own.

hi all, thanks for all the messages. I hope this answers the various points you have made. I did peg the runners where the new leaves were but they carried on growing, and Im talking about 6 inches past the pot !! This left me with the runner stem with some small leaves then more stem and then more leaves which were bigger!
The ones i have cut off and put in pots are still green and not yet dead so I live in hope! If they don't survive there are some more runnres coming off now so i will peg them down and persevere.
This si the first time I have grown any fruit or veg and i am so pleased with my success. I had a good crop of delicious strawbs, loads of spuds, peas, beetroot. My toms are a bit slow (but so are a lot from the posts here) and i am waiting for what looks like a good crop of lettuce.
I am hooked !!!!!!!!!!!!
