  • Is it too late to pick Rhubarb?

    Timperly Early.

Just been out in the garden and noticed how many sticks of rhubarb there are.

Is it too late to pull a few or should I leave it to let the plant flourish.

    I really fancy rhubarb fool..

If it's still firm and there's plenty of it them make that fool.
I'll take a bit more from ours in the next couple of weeks and then leave well alone.

I think rhubarb isn't cut too late in the season a) because it can be woody b) because it needs some stems and foliage left to give it some energy for next years plants and c) because later in the season the oxalic acid (which is what makes the leaves poisonous) leaves the leaf and travels back down the stems.
That's my take on things anyway!.........I'm just away off to check my rhubarb and see if I can get a late picking!
