  • Fruitless cherry tree

I inherited what had been described as a glorious cherry tree producing an abundance of fruit when I moved plots. My first summer(?) has however produced nothing. I witnessed a few small cherries prior to going on holiday however on my return they had gone. Any ideas? I don't thingkthe tree has ever been pruned and many branches appear devoid of foilage/dead. Also sap appears to be oozing from the main trunk. Should I prune and if so how/when?

We have a cherry tree, and this is my experience - we get no cherries either, as the birds eat them all. Oozing sap = bacterial canker. You should prune in the growing season (now) and get rid of all dead wood first and then prune to shape.

Bacterial canker sounds right. If you have oozing sap on the trunk, as opposed to the branches, your tree is a goner. (if it is on a branch, remove the whole branch at least 20 cms below the wound and burn it). If it is on the tree, get someone who knows what canker looks like to verify. If it is, burn the tree. BTW, fruiting would be bad on a cankerous tree....
