thank you amandaandherveg beginners luck for me i think, but i bet you can grow lettuce - this most exotic salad has eluded me every time i've tried, tiny little shrivelled leaves that even the slugs won't touch!!!

Congrats milly! Did you take its picture? Do the small watermelons have as many seeds in them as the big ones?

in all the excitement i forgot to take a pic but i have 4 more almost ready so i'll take some then. they don't seem to have very many seeds in but i have saved some for next year.

Ah, the bit I hate about watermelons is all the seeds in the fruit! How did you grow yours then? Look forward to seeing your pictures btw.

i sowed them 2 to a pot and got rid of the weakest one. i just put them in a large tub (i only had 2 plants) and grew them up string and cane in the greenhouse. when it came to pollinating the flowers i must have put at least 8 male flower onto each female one! it seemed to have worked as i have another 4 almost readyto eat and 2 more the size of golf balls. i did lose some tiny melons which just dropped off the plant. i fed them with tomorite and spoke to them twice a day! i also sang a bit of mcfly which they seemed to like!!!!!!!!!!!

A big congratulations Milly. You must be very pleased. I tried melons for the first time this year. I got great plants but they didn't set any fruit. Haven't decided whether to try again next year . I was inclined to blame the climate but if you can succeed in Wigan I should have a chance too. Might give it another go. Enjoy those melons.
