  • apple problem

I have a 2 year old cox apple tree and have just noticed that the leaves have brown spots on them,(very much like blackspot on roses.)
next to it there is a james greves apple tree same age that is ok.
I was wondering if it may be scab but been new to fruit growing I have not much idea any help please

It could well be scab. When I occasionally get some scab, it often leaves the surface looking a bit lumpy (blistered).
Cox is supposed to be very susceptible to scab and the recent wet weather is just what scab likes, so it might have allowed scab spores to germinate.
Sometimes, apples leaves seem to go brown (after rainfall) from some kind of "sun scorch" effect, where (I assume) water droplets on the leaves magnify the sun's rays and damage the leaf.
You mention that your James Grieve is not troubled. James Grieve is also supposed to be very susceptible to scab (it's also alleged to be an offspring of Cox), but my James Grieve seems to be immune to absolutely everything - even without sprays, although perhaps it is only immune to the strains of disease prevalent in my area. Certainly, there are many strains of scab around, some of which are more virulent than others.

I s most likely to be scab, although there are other fungi that can cause blotched leaves. I had a Worcester Pearnain that had scab for a few years, but, without the use of chemicals (which I would never use) it almost never has scabby fruit now. Each year I rake up and burn the fallen leaves and mulch it heavily with garden compost and this appears to have done the trick.

Sounds like scab to me also. If you clear up the fallen leaves and burn them, it has nowhere to overwinter and you will get rid of it in a couple of years
