  • Planting Quince Tree

    Hi All!

I would like to plant a quince tree this year. However, the only thing I know about quinces is that I absolutely love quince jelly!

Does anybody have any tips on growing quinces?

Plant them like any fruit tree. Good soil, stake, tie. Don't prune them except to remove overcrowding - they are rather untidy trees so just let them get on with it. You do not have to worry about a pollinator as they are self fertile. They will take a couple of years toget going in terms of bearing fruit.

    Good luck

I have three pears grafted onto on Quince rootstocks.
The low-rainfall conditions here in Cambridgeshire make it very difficult for them to establish. There are very few pear trees near to me and I don't know of any Quinces at all, so I'd guess the dry conditions cause other people the same problems as I encounter.
I recommend plenty of watering every few days for at least the first couple of growing seasons, to get the roots established. Don't fruit them while trying to establish the roots.

Thanks for your replies. Will try to find out more about quinces and maybe focus for now on planting apple trees...
