I have a giant bramley tree with loads of apples. Too high to pick so they will all be windfalls. I would like to convert them to apple juice (bramley apples make surprisingly sweet apple juice). I have a small cider press but can anyone think of an inexpensive way of crushing the apples first? Machines such as the vigo crusher are pricy.

In river cottage didn't they use some kind of wood shredder...? Mind you, they were making tonnes and tonnes and tonnes!

get a big bucket or beer making barrel and a piece of 4 x 4 fence post or similar. Place the apples about a third of the way up the barrel and using the end of the wood bash the apples around until roughly mashed. Good for the waist and suprisingly effective as you are only mashing them up a bit.
