  • Figgy advice needed

I have a fig tree in a pot (about 3 years old). It has quite a few figs about an inch long. Will these over winter or are they no good ? Should I protect them ?
I know figs produce several lots of fruit and I know I can only pick one lot but I am not sure at which stage the present lot are.

Try and protect the fruit from frosts and there is a chance they will develop into edible figs next year. But really the season in the Uk only allows for one lot of fruits to develop and some authorities recommend removing all the figlets in November since they will not survive the winter.

My friend found attached to her fig tree,a part that had rooted seperately, she has cut this off and put it in a pot for me.It looks like a regular fig tree, although quite droopy leaved.Any chance of it surviving?

A quote from the book "the Fruit Expert"

"Another problem is winter protection for outdoor crops. This year's figs were present last year as tiny (embryo) fruits. These embryo fruits and young shoots must be individually covered during winter."

        Hope this helps
