Do they need a winter chill before they'll germinate? Some fruits do.....

They can sometimes take a while to germinate. Last Jan I had sewn a tray of strawberry seeds and after 6 weeks I had another go after no signs of any life and both lots germinated at about the same time which was around 2 weeks for the new lot and ended up being around 2 months for the orginal lot.

they take ages i grew some last year some germinated after 2 months some upto 6 months especially if you planted them to deep they only need a thin layer of compost ontop of the seed about a sprinkling thickness. its just better and easyier to use runners, let me know if your ever near near sherwood forest nottingham i could give you some, if you brought your own plant pots or tray with compost in to put them in, as i haven got any compost left at the moment but i go on holiday for a week today, you can always pm me if you want some lisa, take care pc

I must be dead lucky then!

I took some from a supermarket strawberry which son and I particularly enjoyed this year. Variety 'El Santa' grown in Kent. I undertsand that supermarket varieties are particularly selected for their firmness after picking to extend shel-life. This may detract from some of the best flavour - so I'm hoping that if left on plants until we're ready to eat them - they'll be even better!

Peeled and dried the skin from one for around 3-4 weeks. Cut up skin into 20 pieces and placed in small pots. No special compost - just filled with general potting stuff and then poked the seed pieces down with a stick - really 'rustic' gardening techniques employed here I'm afraid! 15 of the 20 pots have now germinated - after around 10 days - most of those growing have multiple seedlings - so will provide more plantlets in due course.

There is of course a long time between now and the springtime when I hope the plants will be big enough to plant outside and develop into fruiters. The theory is that they should be hardy enough if kept indoors in an unheated conservatory/sun lounge - moving away from the window position on the coldest nights.
