I've just popped into a Country Garden GC to find that 90% of their fruit bush/cane stock is at half price. I just thought people would like to know....
Quite a few garden centres/nurseries are offering discounted prices as they clear last season's stock to make way for the new stock that's due any time.
Discounts between 10% and 50% can be had.
I think that it's better to buy in September because many plants are now sending out new root growth for the next season (I have done studies to prove this to myself - September is the best time to plant most deciduous plants). Early rooting allows the plants to establish quicker and grow better next season. Delaying a few weeks and buying the new stock in October causes much less rooting time before dormancy.
I rank the rooting success of new plants in the following order (from best to worst):
1. Container grown planted in early September.
2. Bare rooted planted when dormant.
3. Container grown planted when dormant.
4. Container grown planted in spring.
5. Container grown planted in summer.
With container grown plants (which you'll have when you finally plant that biffin), I like to claw at the edges of the soil/compost with my fingers, to leave some loose roots protruding into the planting hole. I find that it encourages good rooting.
