  • Blue Berry plants in containers

I got three blueberry plants from Wyevale today. They had a sale on
I'm going to plant them in containers for now. Thing is I know they need acidic soil and I've got ordinary bog standard compost from GC. So what to do? How to plant please?

    Many thanks

I planted mine in biggish pots in ordinary compost , as I didn't have anything else. I just water them with fertiliser for acid loving plants and they are fine. I had a good crop this year and they have grown about 3 ft over the summer.I have to think about how I am going to cut them back a bit , I understand that you do this in March but I'm worried about cutting off the branches of the next crop, Hope this helps.Div.x

It has two chances , up or down.

I've always used ericaceous compost. A bag might seem expensive, but it keeps well so you can use it again at a later date, either for potting on your current plants or for when you next buy a blueberry. Sadly it is peat-based and I do try to use peat-free composts so if anyone has had success with a bog-standard, peat-free compost I'd be grateful to hear of it.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

Fiona, your just down the road to me. I would be interested if you find that post about pruning as I don't want to cut off all the branches that will fruit next year , but at the same time my bushes are getting rather large and Iv'e only had them 1 1/2 years.
