Growing Pineapples - any advice?

After reading on many sites about growing Pineapples from the crown of the fruit, I thought I would try it.
Different websites had different methods. I have since the summer being buying fresh pineapples, and trying to grow them, I have done as it said, cut away the excess flesh to reveal the root buds, and taken off about half an inch of the leaves from the bottom. I let the bottom dry out to "heal" from 24hrs, then have tried leaving it slightly in water, using rooting powder and put it in compost, and also just put it into compost.
On all attempts the leaves have slowely gone brown, and dropped off, or came away. and have started smelling, and gone rotten. In the end I have had to throw them all away.
I haven't given up as yet, and I'm still determinded to get them to grow, or at least one to grow. I have just bought 2 more pineapples, and have again trying one slightly in water, and will try the other in compost again.

Has anyone got pineapples to grow in UK, and what have you done to get them to grow successfully. Would be very interested to hear about it, and see any pictures at the different stages if you have them. Hoping to hear back from ppl soon.

Really keen to get this current batch to grow!!!

My friend used to grow them inside and also in a greenhouse (in Pennsylvania).. I think he just trimmed off the bottom flesh, pealed back a few bottom leaves, then stuck it into some dirt. He even got baby fruit off the ones in the greenhouse!
Saying that, I've tried it myself with no success. I did it exactly the same way you're describing, let it set for 24 hours then into a glass of water. I'm growing other bromeliads about the house, and with those you water them mainly in their reservoirs created by the leaves. I've got a pineapple ready to cut at the moment, and I'm going to try just trimming the flesh and sticking it directly into some barely moist dirt.. then filling up the reservoirs with water and misting it several times a day. That's what I do when potting up baby bromeliads, so hopefully it might work for a pineapple.

I'll have to try that with the other one, i tended to just put potting compost, and then water once a week, as i read that they "dont like their feet getting wet"!!!
but ill try the misting part, see if that makes a difference.

It is possible, all i did was rip off some lower leaves until you see rootlets? then i just stuck it in a pot, eventually it will root, water sparingly (i keep forgetting but it still lives) and protect from frost. last years got caught by frost and never recovered, but i started again and this years is going great.

did you cut off the flesh at the bottom to expose the root buds?

I twisted the top off mine, then peeled off the bottom leaves and stuck it in some compost. I've neglected it a bit as far as watering goes but it's doing quite well. Must be almost a year old now.

I think that is one of the sites I have checked out previously
