  • Grape Vine cutting

I've inherited a grape vine cutting. It's apparently a couple of years old and had several leaves on when I first got it. It's planted in a giant pot of compost in my conservatory but the leaves have died leaving me with a stick in the ground. Is this normal? Anything special I need to do over the winter? My conservatory is cold at night but is the warmest room in the house during the daytime although the plant came from a neighbour who has it growing outside all year round.

My first post but what an amazing resource these forums are!

Never grown a grape vine, would love to try.
A quick google tells me that it is normal for the vines to lose their leaves in the winter, to reserve their energy for next years growth, so that would seem to be normal for your cutting too.
I know some people on here grow grape vines so I am sure someone more fitting than I will be able to reassure you

My vine lives outside on a south facing wall of my house, and although I live a bit further south than you, its not that far. It dies back in winter to not a lot at all, and then bursts forth again in spring.
Bride I am taking cuttings of my vine and sending back to UK so I can send you one if you would like?

Bobleponge, may I ask for advice on taking vine cuttings please? I got a load of grapes from a freecycler yesterday and took a few bits of the vine to try and root (huge huge vine - I didn't realise they could grow that big over here by the coast). Now I don't know what to do with them to make sure I have a good chance of success.

I take cuttings from my vines every year to give rooted plants to other plotters. I take the cuttings when the vine is dormant and just stick them into a pot with potting compost in a cold greenyhouse and just sit back. Success every time. Just make sure that you put them into the pot the right way up and watch for vine weevil which love the young roots. Your cuttings are probably tending towards dormancy and should start growing next spring.

Thanks for that. Will cut them to bits and stick in soil in the greenhouse tomorrow.

Sorry I've only just seen your posting. Whilst I am no expert, I only do what realfood has described, and as yet I havent really had a problem. Only 1 hasnt taken from the dozen or so I have given away.
                Good luck
