  • Where should I overwinter my peach tree?

It's first winter I have had it, is in a large pot. Options are:

    1) Leave it outside and cover with fleece

    2) Put it in unheated greenhouse (with or without fleece)

    3) Put it in shed or garage.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks janeyo

One of the main problems with peach trees is peach leaf curl, which is a fungus (I think), spread by rain in the winter. An unheated greenhouse would be best, it will keep the rain off (so no peach leaf curl), but the tree will still get light, especially important as it flowers around Feb time. I'd cover with fleece in the greenhouse if it is in bloom, but only when frost is likely. You will need to hand pollinate the flowers, I use a paintbrush, as there is unlikely to be any insects around at that time of the year. If you are around, it is best done about midday as the fruit is more likely to set, but any time is better than none. I lost my last one because it was out through the winter. It still flowered, but lost so many leaves to the peach leaf curl that it did not survive. I've already got my next one in the greenhouse!
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!
    Now a little Shrinking Violet.
