We have been trialling several varieties of strawberries in recent years. The varieties were chosen from organic lists.
None of the varieties has suffered from any noticeable disease issues.
In our order of our preference, with some brief comments from our experience:
1.
Pegasus
Soft flesh (almost mushy texture), good flavour, sweet (nobody will need sugar), heavy crops, very vigorous growing, prolific runner production.
2.
Symphony
Excellent flavour, but can be a little sharp for some people, heavy crops, vigorous growing, good runner production.
3.
Hapil
Good taste, good crops, fairly vigorous, good runner production - although runners seem to need some encouragement to root themselves.
4.
Florence
Good taste, light crops, weak growing, almost no runners.
5.
Alice
Good taste, light crops, weak growing, not many runners, although some runners will try to fruit before they've even set roots of their own!
6.
Honeoye
Good taste, weak growing, not many runners.
7.
Roman
Average taste, mishshapen fruits, pink flowers, very weak growing, adequate runners. Only buy this one if you want the medium-pink flowers for decorative purposes.
Hope that's of interest, although what performs well in our area may have no bearing on what performs well elsewhere in the UK.
