  • First fruit of the year

Hi All - just wondering if anyone had picked any ripe fruit from their garden yet this year. My local supermarket has locally grown strawberries on sale, and in my poly-tunnel one of the fruit on the Tayberry is turning pink.

PS I'm not accepting rhubarb as a valid answer - If in order to eat something with enjoyment it has to be both cooked and a sweetener added, then whatever else it may be it isn't a ripe fruit imo :-)

Do windfall apples collected in mid-January count?
There's a communal orchard at the bottom of my allotment, and the apples from one of the trees just never seem to go bad. They were still firm and fine well into February, despite just lying on the ground underneath the tree.

I've got my eye on one strawberry just starting to change colour.
Thats if the frost or pigeons don't get to it first!!

Good try with the windfalls but I'm afraid I am going to rule that they are last year's fruit which have stayed fit to eat, sorry. I Have a few apples left which are just about edible from the ones I picked last year, so on a more serious note if you pick a few ripe apples in your allotment orchard and store them well they may be good eating this time next year - anyway hope is a big part of gardening :-)
