  • Newbie Growing Fruit/Veg in Greenhouse

    Hi All

First Timer, I have just purchased a walk-in greenhouse from Aldi and looking to grow some fruit & veg in containers in the greenhouse

have started with some tomatoes, planted raspberries and a blueberry. Also got some cucumbers and peppers started.

obviously do not have loads of space but just wondering what else Can be successfully grown in containers in a G/H

i have orders some shallow root carrot seeds and some melon seeds too. Think I may be getting carried away!

Seen other tips on here an got some free flower containers from the supermarket, great tip.

    TIA

Raspberries and blueberries want to go outside. It will probably be too warm for them in a greenhouse, and at the very least they don't really need the extra heat, and said heat will only make them dry out quicker (which is problem enough in pots as it is, without making it worse). Carrots, too, are better off outside.

      Welcome to the Vine Spike2020!

Your Tomatoes, Cucumbers (depending on type), Peppers and Melons all want to be in the greenhouse, as Ameno says above, Carrots, Raspberries and Blueberries all go outside, in pots or the ground. Raspberries tolerate some shade. Blueberries need ericaceous compost.
Lots of crops, Runner Beans, French Beans, Peas, Potatoes, Beetroots, plus many more I can't think of can all be grown in pots outdoors.
Greenhouses, especially small ones get very, very, very hot even on not hot days! Only your tender heat loving plants need to go in the greenhouse.

      Have fun and good luck!

Tomatoes obviously are a high value crop for GH's, another one is strawberries which will fruit much earlier if grown for part of the season in a GH, but they do need to go outside for a spell of cold in the winter, I grow some in those large Morrison Flower buckets.

Salads in the Autumn and early spring are usually good too.

Probably best to conceptualise it in terms of different seasons with different crops, some of which may overlap a bit.

That said I have a large poly tunnel and in that now some Tayberry fruit are almost ready to eat, while I noticed today a few cherries are starting to blush pink on one tree. I've got toms in there too of course and the most advanced of those is about 2' high and hopefully will start flowering next week.

Hello and welcome to the vine Spike

it might be a bit early to put your toms, cucumbers and peppers in the GH depends on your overnight temps if its going to be frosty they're better of staying in the house.

Hi Spike and welcome. Peppers and chilli's do well in a greenhouse but it's too late to start them from seed now, maybe you'd find young plants at a garden centre.

              Hi Spike and welcome.
If it is a plastic greenhouse you will need to be careful it doesn't overheat.
I have one and have to make sure it's open first thing in the morning.
At the moment I have a few cucumbers and squash in also some peppers.
good luck and enjoy the growing seasonl

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.
