  • Raspberry canes

Still no sign of life from the Joan J bare roots I bought from Marshalls earlier this year, so I dug them up to have a look. Couldn’t resist I kept walking past them and wondering what was going on. Anyway 3/6 had wee white shoots coming from the roots so that is good. The other 3 had no sign of life and looked the same as they did when I planted months go. So they are either dormant or dead. So am just going to put some tomatoes in the space in the bed and leave the rasps there to see what happens. Can’t bear to have a bed I’m not using. Don’t know what happened, sure I looked after them as instructed. Always found raspberries easy to grow and a bit of a thug to be honest.

I had the same with some bare root plants, none of mine grew, so I went back to the GC and they gave me what they had left, trouble is it seems I have Autumn fruiting ones and I wanted earlier ones, the early frosts can be a problem up here.

Only 1 out of the 3 barebroot joan j planted here leafing out. Bit annoying when the established varieties are putting out escapees for fun

Yes my other raspberry bed is rammed and plenty escapees shooting up feet away from the bed. Just assumed rasps were an easy crop to grow as never had any problems before. I have planted a few tomato plants in the bed to at least have something growing in it.

Maybe it's all the dry weather we've had? Bare roots need a lot of moisture to establish.

They most likely dried out in the garden center before you bought them.
If you transplant them fresh they go off like trifids.

I've had this problem twice now.
I bought 10 canes (5 summer, 5 autumn) last May. Obviously, this was quite late for bare root, but I kept them well watered. 4 of 5 summer canes and 2 of 5 autumn canes grew. The others didn't even sprout a little.
I complained, and they sent me replacements in November, which I planted. None are showing any signs of life as of yet (and I sincerely doubt they will at this point).
I think I'm just going to try and get a partial refund at this point, and fill the gaps by transplanting some of the ones which have taken, which are now growing dozens of canes in every direction.

Wonder if I should get back in touch with Marshalls where I bought them. Hadn’t really been thought of that but if you think it’s worth a shot might do that.

Only 1 of my bare root canes from Hayloft shows any signs of life (a single green bud) the other 5 all died. Apparently many commercial growers have stopped using bare root canes due to high failure rates and have switched to cell grown plants, so I have decided to order some cell grown ones from Pomona, hopefully those will do better then the bare root ones.
