  • Gooseberry Hinnomaki Yellow

I have a plant that is supposed to be Hinnomaki Yellow, but the fruits are green when ripe. I wouldn't even say they're yellowish green. I believe there is another variety called Hinnomaki Green and I'm wondering if that's actually what I have. It's a remarkably prolific bush but the growth habit is really difficult, no matter how much I prune it it seems determined to sprawl everywhere.

Anyone else growing it and can comment?

Don't have a picture just now, the bush is at my allotment and I cooked up a big batch of jam this morning using all the fruits I had.

All of the Hinnonmaki series have a rather sprawling growth habit (I have Red, and they are all wider than they are tall)

Yes I have the red ones too, they are great. The bushes do tend to grow laterally but not as badly as this yellow/green one. It has branches that are almost weeping in habit.

You might try putting in metal uprights of some kind that you can tie the branches to. As you probably know because gooseberries fruit on old wood its possible to build up a permanent framework of branches which the fruit will form on each year, a bit like a mini apple tree.

Failing that you could strike some new cuttings and grow them as a row of cordons against a fence or a wire framework for support.

I bought a red one from Wilco and have lost the label. The fruit pulls the branches down where they root.
The only way to stop it is by training it up wires on a fence.
The fruits are nice and sweet.
