    Anyone knowledgeable about figs?

I have a fig tree growing in a pot, variety Excel, which is supposed to be a very tasty green variety. I purchased it from a reputable nursery who specialised in figs, unfortunately they are no longer in business. They recommended this variety as one that was especially good eating, and suitable for outdoor growing in the UK.

The tree has never made decent fruit. It produces plenty but they are always dry inside, particularly around the end furthest from the stem, and the flavour is disappointing. I thought maybe it was because I wasn’t watering it enough. But this year due to lockdown I’ve been able to give it a lot more attention and the fruit is just the same.

From some online research there is something called a caprifig, which is a male fig and not good for eating. I’m wondering if it’s possible this is what I have?

Last year I purchased another fig of a different variety and although that tree is very young the fruit is juicy and delicious.

Just edited to add, I read that if it’s a caprifig it would have both female and male flowers inside it (the whole interior of a fig is actually the inflorescence) and the male flowers would give off pollen when brushed or shaken. I’ve checked and that’s definitely the case.
