  • Recommended Strawberry Varieties For North Of UK

Title says it all really. I'm looking for strawberry variety recommendations that are suited to growing in the north of the UK.

I am growing Mara de bois in Edinburgh.

Pink Panda perpetual variety really struggled in Cumbria and arrived up here looking half dead but less than 12 months here in Moray, NE Scotland and the one plant has gone berserk and has had more flowers than ever before.

I'm in Angus and manage to grow most of the usual suspects quite well, Cambridge Favourite, Honeye and Elsanta provided good crops and I also grow Mara des Bois, but I grow them in containers and they spend almost all of the year in my greenhouse, that way the season is extended, I am still picking a few and there are still flowers on them as well. I find the French ones are bit less hardy for our climate.

I got a deal on 6 varieties so that I could try out here to see what worked best, and later added some Mara de bois.

best for me have been honeoye followed by symphony (and one is early and one late do extends the season) both outside.

hapil tasteless here, Cambridge favourite less tasty than honeoye or symphony and send out more suckers, sweet colossus big but weird crunchy texture and minimal taste.

there’s some everbearers called finesse which get decimated by slugs early season but then have a second flush late season which are nicer, but less taste and worse texture than symphony.

i do like the flavour and soft texture of Mara de bois but they’re not great croppers. I put some in the ground which produced no fruit. Some in pots in cold greenhouse which tasted good but not very productive. Some in pots outside on warm patio and they were the best of the Mara de bois. Early flush all pinched by birds but later ones ignored.

I’m trying to propagate suckers from my honeoye and symphony so that I can use them to replace the others.

One worth considering as a garden browsing fruit are the ting white and red Alpine Strawberries, a real hit of flavour from those tiny fruits, my Grandsons favourites are the white ones.

Just to say my new Mara de bois are still producing fruit and they are delicious
