  • Blackberry propagation

My blackberry has produced a cane long enough to reach the ground. I have planted the tip in a large pot from which I had just removed two dwarf french bean plants. Will the tip root and produce another plant? Is this too late in the year for it to root and do I need to do anything else.

The plant might suffer in a pot if you get hard frosts in the winter, otherwise it should work, that is how they spread.

It your plant is anything like a wild one you will have another plant even if the end of the vine finds a small crack in concrete.
If your new planting spot is close enough keep it off the ground until it reaches.
We have enough wild blackberries to fulfill our needs so I do not grow them on my plot.

It may be too late in the year by now (usually they root in late summer to early autumn), but there's no harm in leaving it for now and just waiting and seeing.

Unfortunatly there is no soil near to the blackberry tip. I have used a 10" pot and stood it on a brick so I can bury the tip. I can only wait and see what happens next year.

Is it worth trying to protect the pot from frost in any way, though I can't think how.

I wouldn't bother were you are, to be honest. It shouldn't get cold enough for it to harm a blackberry.
