  • Has anyone heard of a Summerberry ?

    Hi
I want to ask if anyone here knows of a Blackberry hybrid called a Summerberry, please ?.
It's just that when I started allotment growing some 10+ years ago I inherited a Blackberry type hybrid vine thing, and was reliably informed by probably the oldest resident of the allotments that it was a "Summerberry".
I've only ever seen this plant in one other place other than our allotments and that was a single potted plant in our local garden centre years ago and that was labelled a Summerberry as well.
It's a very large and prolific plant, producing new growth shoots of up to 25 ft long at least, the new stems start a sort of greyish colour but then turn deep, dark red as they mature, the real difference with this thing is that the fruit, when fully Ripe doesn't taste like any other hybrid I've come across, it has a very mild but beautifully sweet taste that I can only liken to Vimto. Its so good in fact that nearly every person at our allotments has one.
I've searched the Internet for it and found nothing and was wondering if anyone has come across this plant

Never heard of it, this could be a local name for say a Tayberry or something similar?

Summerberry I know very little about I think hildaberry was one parent but can"™t remember the other ( I had the Hildaberry and grew more Like the tayberry

from what you"™ve described it reminds me very much of the Sunberry , I have the sunberry it"™s crazy vigourous, strange coloured canes gray/blue? But the berries are almost black very sweet flavour and smell like jam,

if possible try and propagate more up we are losing old hybrid berries varieties

Apologies its taken so long to reply.
Hi again Swaine, I think you may be right about this plant and its actually a Sunberry and its very much like what you describe.
By the way, when I last spoke to you, I was cultivating an acquired King's Acre Berry, you'll be pleased to hear that it's thriving and is quite large.
An interesting looking thing though what with all the lateral shoots and tastes pretty good as well.

That"™s great news about the kings acre , well done
I remember the conversation I have one but not 100% it"™s true to type ( the books with info on the kings acre are wildly different descriptions of it)
