  • Honeysuckle and moths

I was thinking of planting a honeysuckle in the garden to grow over my shed but it will be about 12 foot away from my apple tree and I am concerned that as honeysuckles are know to attract moths if this will be a bad idea with regard to Codling moths

    Any thoughts ?

I wouldn't worry personally, you can use pheromone traps and grease bands to keep them out the apple trees and the benefits ( the scent for one - If you can't get the native Woodbine then Serotina is a good 2nd) and we used to get Bullfinches on ours eating the berries - great view from the kitchen window.

Are codling moths only attracted to fruit trees, maybe the honeysuckle scent would distract one from the apple tree?

Fruit moths (plum or apple) lay their eggs in the immature fruit as part of their life cycle, and so target them just after they have flowered. Moths which feed on nectar from flowers like honeysuckle do not as far as I am aware interact with fruit trees at all.
